Madriella has many members in Michigan so we are excited to pass on the news that as of October 1, 2024, the Medicaid Services (MMP 24-40) policy has undergone a crucial update, raising the rate for labor support services to $1,500 (previously $700) and expanding the number of postpartum visits from six to 12, now compensated at $100 per visit (previously $75).
This is a huge victory for both doulas and the families we serve, ensuring that mothers and their babies receive the comprehensive support they need during the perinatal period. These changes will greatly enhance access to vital care, making it more affordable and available to Medicaid recipients across the state.
A Collective Effort
The Doula Advisory Council, alongside the Michigan doula community, played an instrumental role in advocating for this change. Through relentless effort and advocacy, we helped move this policy forward to better support the families we care for. This achievement demonstrates the power of working together as a community to uplift maternal health services and ensure more equitable access to essential doula care.
The Importance of Medicaid for Doula Services
Medicaid coverage for doula services is a critical step toward bridging gaps in maternal health care, especially for families who might otherwise struggle to afford these essential services. Doula care has been shown to reduce the likelihood of birth complications, improve outcomes for both mother and baby, and provide emotional and physical support during a time when it is needed most. For many low-income families, paying out of pocket for doula services is simply not an option. By expanding Medicaid coverage, we are taking an important step in ensuring that every family—regardless of their financial circumstances—can benefit from the compassionate, evidence-based care that doulas provide.
Medicaid plays a vital role in addressing maternal health disparities, particularly among historically underserved communities. Doula services are a proven way to help reduce racial and economic inequalities in birth outcomes, making the expansion of this coverage especially significant for families across Michigan.
Madriella’s Commitment to Accessible Doula Care
At Madriella, we strongly believe that every family deserves the opportunity to have doula support, regardless of their financial situation. Our mission is to train and support doulas who are dedicated to making a difference in their communities, and we are proud to stand behind policies that increase access to this critical care. We recognize that without Medicaid’s expanded support, many families would be unable to access the care they deserve.
By reaching families who might otherwise be unable to afford doula services, this update ensures that more women can experience the benefits of continuous support during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. It represents a big step toward making birth support equitable, accessible, and inclusive for all.
What This Means for You
Doulas now have more opportunities to engage with and support clients, both during labor and in the postpartum period. With higher reimbursement rates, this policy change acknowledges the value of the essential care that doulas provide.
Join us in celebrating this momentous update! Together, we continue our work toward a future where every family has access to the care and support they need.
